Restaurant.

How to pronounce 'restaurant'

This lesson is about a place where we go to eat. A restaurant.

The word 'restaurant' has three syllables,

Rest au rant

and, many students stress the three syllables evenly, which results in:

Rest au rant

But in fact, we pronounce these syllables with the following rhythm:

One / Two/ Three And this gives us

Restaurant.

The stress is almost the same as a two syllable word – restrant – with just a moment of the 'au' sound between 'rest' and 'rant'.

Notice the last syllable is pronounced 'rant' and not RAN T. The 'ant' part of the word is pronounced the same as in the word 'want'. Want, ant, rant, restaurant.
